Advocacy to influence strategies and public policy is an essential part of supporting and advancing healthcare systems in Africa. But with a complex mix of diplomacy, financial capacity and relational capital required to make advocacy effective, how can it be best implemented by those wishing to support governments?

The understanding that government healthcare should be available free of charge to all who need it sometimes overlooks the real cost that patients have to pay in order to access healthcare services.

Public healthcare systems serve millions of people. Governments require complex systems and extensive management to provide care. To do this effectively, the patients the systems are created to serve have in many cases been reduced to numbers rather than people. What will it take to reimagine healthcare in Africa for patients as people first?

If governments release part of their supply chain distribution and warehousing, they don’t lose control but actually gain an incredible advantage through better use of funding, supply chain functional agility and access to expertise from service providers.

Governments do not need to start from scratch to work out how to get medicines to patients. The private sector has immense existing knowledge and tried and tested approaches that can be leveraged in the public health space.
